2024 Emmys: On ‘The Bear’ Big Night, ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’ Emmys Go to an Actual Comedy Series

2024 Emmy co-host Eugene Levy cut it in his opening monologue. “I know some of you are probably expecting us to joke about it Bear is really a comedy,” Levy said. “But in the true spirit Bear … we’re not kidding.”

As far as the narrative surrounding this year’s Emmys goes, it was this: Why Bear—a show about a tormented Chicago chef dealing with the trauma of his brother’s suicide while trying to run a high-pressure restaurant, with people all dealing with their own struggles—competing in the comedy category? Everyone seems to agree: Bear is good television and should win some Emmys. (Well, almost everyone.) Everyone seems to think so, too: It’s awesome Bear classified as a comedy.

And at the 2024 Emmys, monologue jokes or not, Bear more or less drowned out the comedy category. Not only this – that broke his record at the Emmys for most wins by a comedian in one season.

The Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series finally went to it Hacks. But otherwise, tonight: Christopher Storer won for best director of a comedy series. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Richie’s cousin, took home Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Lisa Colon-Zayas won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series — which is fitting, since Tina jokes by saying “yeah Jeff” instead of “chef.” Jeremy Allen White, his perennial icon, took home Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, beating out both Steve Martin and Martin Short. Just killing in the building and Larry David for the final season Curb your passionwhich, ironically, is basically what happens with TV Larry. (Ayo Edebiri was defeated in the Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series category by Jean Smart. HacksDeborah Vance gave a speech of gratitude; While Best Writer in a Comedy Series also went to Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downes and Jen Statsky were honored. Hacks.)

In the non-televised portion of this year’s awards, Bear also took home awards for Jamie Lee Curtis as Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series; Jon Bernthal as a featured guest star in a comedy series; Outstanding sound editing; Outstanding Image Editing for a Single-Camera Comedy Series; Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half Hour); Outstanding sound mixing for comedy or drama series (half hour) and animation; and Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series.

The comedy misfire category may feel more intense because tonight’s show will be the second time the Emmys have aired in a year — the 2023 ceremony was pushed back to January this year due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. So, this is the second time in a calendar year that this has happened Bear swept the comedy category for seasons one and two. When you compare the show’s heavy-handed tenor to recent comedy winners –Ted Lasso, Fleabag, Veep, Modern Family– this is a noticeable change in tone.

So why? Bear classified as a comedy? It’s simple: FX decided to present it as a comedy, and nothing could stand in the way. Back in 2015, plagued by dramatic dominance, the Emmys tried to split the categories by time. Anything 30 minutes or less was automatically a comedy, while anything else had to be considered a drama. This effect shows like Orange is the new blackwhich had to compete as a drama instead of a comedy, but that flawed rule was trashed in 2021.

The third season Bearwhich aired last June, is even more different than anything you might call a comedy – here GQwe even referred to it as a “horror story of restaurant life”. Without any rules or guards, it can Bear to reconsider their head-scratching categories? Or are they trying to convince the world that they are comedians? [Mournfully] Please no, boss.
