Selena Gomez drops 3-word politics at the Emmys

Selena Gomez made a powerful political reference at the 2024 Emmys on Sunday night.

The singer and actress poked fun at “childless cat women,” referring to Republican Sen. J.D. Vance’s now-widely-derided remarks about women who don’t have children.

During a moment on stage with her “Only Kills in the Building” co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin, Gomez laughed uncontrollably as Martin and Short playfully shot shots at each other.

Then the singer began to tell what he likes about his colleagues.

“Let me just say what an honor it is to work with two guys who are so far from childless cat ladies,” she said. (Watch the video here.)

Actor Candice Bergen similarly took digs at Vance’s comments during the ceremony.

In presenting the award, Bergen revisited how then-Vice President Dan Quayle criticized her character in the 1992 series “Murphy Brown,” a woman who consciously decides to raise a child on her own.

“Oh, how far we’ve come. A Republican vice presidential candidate today would never attack a woman for having a child,” Bergen said on stage. “As they say, I’m done here. Meow.”

Vance, former President Donald Trump’s 2024 re-election rival, has come under widespread scrutiny for comments he made in his 2021 re-election bid.

In the interview, he mocked Vice President Kamala Harris, now a Democratic presidential candidate, as one of those “childless cat women” who are “miserable” with their lives but run the country.

People criticized the senator from Ohio, pointing out that there are many reasons why a woman may or may not have children. (Harris is the parent of two stepchildren, Ella and Cole Emhoff.)

Gomez said in an interview with Vanity Fair last week that she cannot carry her children due to medical reasons.

The actress, who has publicly discussed living with lupus and bipolar disorder, told the publication that she feels “grateful” to find other ways to become a mother in the future, such as adoption or surrogacy.

Gomez’s best friend, pop star Taylor Swift, sparked a media frenzy when she endorsed Harris for president in a statement on social media last week.

Swift captioned the post as “Childless Cat Lady.”
